Shinshin Kaizen Usui Reiki Ryōhō Shōden

A Shōden 初傳 level training course is the first step into the Shinshin Kaizen Usui Reiki Ryōhō system as taught by Usui Sensei. 

Rather than a modern reinterpretation, our Shōden training course preserves the cultural roots, mindset, and practical techniques of early Reiki practitioners.

Students learn how Reiki was originally understood in Japan, receive Reiju (the traditional method of reconnecting to Reiki), and practice the core treatment methods that form the heart of Usui Reiki Ryōhō.

Shōden level teachings focus on simplicity, hands-on practice, and understanding how Reiki supports the body’s natural ability to restore balance and well-being.  

Prerequisites for this training

As Shōden is the first level of training within Shinshin Kaizen Usui Reiki Ryōhō, there are no prerequisites and no previous experience is required. All we ask is that you arrive with an open mind, a willingness to learn, and a sincere desire to practice.

Although this training is open to everyone, regardless of previous experience, all students are required to begin with the Shōden level training course. This ensures that the teachings are preserved and transmitted in the traditional manner in which they are practiced within our lineage.

Shōden training courses are typically offered four times each year, providing students with regular opportunities to begin their Reiki journey.

Shōden Training Course

What you will receive

• An official Dentō Reiki Kyōkai Shōden Shidōsho (Shōden Level Instruction Manual).

• A certificate acknowledging your successful completion of the Shōden level training course.

• Four (4) Reiju—traditional practices that assist the student in deepening their natural connection with Reiki.

• Two full days (approximately eight hours each) of instruction, discussion, and hands-on practice.

• Dedicated time for questions, discussion, and a deeper exploration of the practical aspects of the teachings.

• Access to ongoing practice opportunities designed to support your continued growth and strengthen your understanding of Usui Reiki Ryōhō.

Things to keep in mind

• The training course is typically scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Arriving 15 minutes early is appreciated.

• Please bring a notebook and pen for taking notes.

• If applicable, any outstanding participation fees must be paid no later than the beginning of the first day of the training course.

• Please bring a light sweater or jacket in case the room is cool.

• Bottled water will be provided. You are also welcome to bring a light snack if you wish.

After the training course

Upon successful completion of the Shōden training course:

• You may perform Reiki treatment sessions for yourself, your family, and your friends.

• You may begin working toward fulfilling the requirements for advancement to the Okuden training course.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN DURING THE

Shōden Training Course

初傳 第一部 Shōden Dai-ichibu (Part One) 

• Key terms used in Reiki Ryōhō and their culturally correct meanings.

• Understanding the distinction between “Reiki” and “Reiki Ryōhō.”

• The History of Mikao Usui and the development of his Reiki Ryōhō.

• The Reiki Gokai — the foundational teachings of Usui Reiki Ryoho passed down directly from Usui Sensei.

• Jōshin Kokyū-hō — a breathing practice for purifying the body and mind.

• Reiju — understanding what it is and why we do it, and receive the first reiju of the shōden level.

初傳 第二部 Shōden Dai-nibu (Part Two)

• The traditional Reiki Ryōhō perspective on the causes of illness and disease.

• How Reiki functions in healing and the traditional approach to giving Reiki treatments.

• Byōsen & Hibiki — how to perceive it, what is the difference and how to respond to what you feel.

• Kenyoku-hō — a “dry bathing” technique that supports clarity and hibiki perception.

• Reiju — receive the second reiju of the shōden level.

Traditionally, Shōden training was divided into four sections. A participant would attend meetings where they listened to lectures, received instruction, and practiced the teachings. Each section was designated as a tō (等), or rank: Roku-tō (六等, Sixth Rank), Go-tō (五等, Fifth Rank), Yon-tō (四等, Fourth Rank), and San-tō (三等, Third Rank). Upon completing San-tō, the participant was awarded the Shōden level.

In modern times, this format of training can be difficult for many people to attend regularly. The Dentō Reiki Kyōkai therefore uses a modern seminar format which divides the curriculum into four sections:  Shōden Dai-ichibu (初傳 第一部, Shōden, Part One), Shōden Dai-nibu (初傳 第二部,Shōden, Part Two), Shōden Dai-sanbu (初傳 第三部, Shōden, Part Three) and Shōden Dai-yonbu (初傳 第四部, Shōden, Part Four) to make the teachings more accessible while preserving the content and progression of the traditional training. 

As the foundational level of Shinshin Kaizen Usui Reiki Ryōhō, the Shōden course is scheduled for two full days, and provides a balanced combination of theoretical instruction and hands-on practical training. Participants receive four (4) Reiju, with two (2) given each day.

初傳第三部 Shōden Dai-sanbu (Part Three)

• Reiju — receive the third reiju of the shōden level.

• Reiki Mawashi — an exercise designed to help develop sensitivity to the movement of Reiki.

• Gasshō Meisō — a specialized meditation to help you develop perception to hibiki.

• Study of key sections of the Kōkai Denju Setsumei, a document containing Usui Sensei’s own words.

• Gyōshi-hō — a simple technique of sending Reiki with the eyes to an affected area on the body.

• Kōki-hō — the method of using the breath to send Reiki onto an affected area of the body.

初傳 第四部 Shōden Dai-yonbu (Part Four)

• Reiju — receive the fourth reiju of the shōden level.

• Nentatsu-hō — a method used to send thoughts or intentions enhanced by Reiki.

• Shūchū Reiki — concentrated Reiki treatment method (group Reiki treatement).

• Renzoku Reiki — continuous Reiki treatment approach.

• Discussion on what is required to advance to the Okuden training course.
