Is Reiki Ryōhō a Religion or a Spiritual Practice?

Usui Sensei intended his Reiki Ryōhō to be accessible to everyone, regardless of their religious belief or cultural background.

While Reiki is not a religion, it is not entirely without spiritual elements. Like many aspects of Japanese life, Reiki developed within a culture deeply influenced by Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism and Shinto, and traces of these traditions can be seen in its language, etiquette, and philosophy. These cultural influences are not evidence that Reiki Ryōhō originated from, or that its teachings are derived from, any religion or religious sect. Rather, they reflect the cultural environment in which Usui Sensei developed his Reiki Ryōhō.

Some agenda driven practitioners, have suggested that Reiki is directly connected to Buddhism or Shinto because certain customs, terminology, or outward forms appear similar to those found within these religions. While such similarities certainly exist, similarity alone does not necessarily imply identity or dependence. Many practices that developed within the same cultural environment naturally share common expressions without belonging to the same religious tradition. The presence of familiar forms should therefore not be taken as evidence that practicing Reiki requires adherence to any particular religion or should be practiced in the same manner.

If Reiki is not a religion, then what is meant by its spiritual aspect? In Usui Reiki Ryōhō, spirituality is not found in religious doctrine or ritual, but in the gradual refinement of one's character through sincere practice. Rather than asking practitioners to believe in a particular philosophy, Reiki encourages them to cultivate qualities that improve both themselves and their relationships with others.

This process of self-cultivation is embodied in the Reiki Gokai, or Five Precepts, which Usui Sensei encouraged practitioners to contemplate and live by each day:

"The greatest achievement of Usui Sensei, is that he never allowed it [Reiki Ryōhō] to become a sect."

The Gokai are not articles of faith, nor are they religious commandments. They are practical principles that encourage us to develop greater awareness, gratitude, compassion, honesty, and self-discipline in our everyday lives. Their purpose is not to change what we believe, but to influence how we think, how we act, and how we relate to those around us.

Through regular practice, the compassionate treatment of others, and a sincere effort to embody the Gokai, we begin to notice positive changes within ourselves. Our attitudes soften, our perspectives broaden, and qualities such as humility, gratitude, kindness, and compassion naturally become a greater part of our daily lives. In this way, the spiritual aspect of Reiki Ryōhō is something to be experienced through practice rather than professed through belief.

As our practice deepens, these changes often become more apparent. Sincere practice cultivates the practitioner, while treatment benefits the recipient. Together, these two outcomes contribute to the well-being of families, communities, and ultimately society as a whole. In this sense, the true spiritual nature of Reiki Ryōhō is found not in religious affiliation, but in the quiet and continual process of becoming a kinder, more compassionate human being.
